Choosing the Right Stone

Selecting the perfect stone or surface is a pivotal decision that significantly influences the outcome of your project. At Henge Stone Works, we carry the top brands and offer custom cuts for the perfect finish.

The Importance of the Perfect Light Source and Surface Combination

Picking the right combination of your chosen light source and the stone or surface is essential to ensure even and effective illumination. We'll work with you to find the ideal match that meets your expectations.

Testing Surface Translucency

Understanding how transparent your surface is plays a crucial role in determining whether Light Tape® or LEDs are the best solution for your project. Our Backlighting Surface Test™ is a simple yet effective way to gauge the translucency of your surface.

  • Conduct the test in normal ambient or low light to replicate installation conditions.
  • Place your phone's flashlight on the back of the surface.
  • If you observe a bright dot without a light halo, your surface is opaque. A dot with a halo indicates a more translucent surface.
  • Gradually move the light away and see if the halo grows. A growing halo suggests a very translucent surface.

The level of translucency informs your choice between Light Tape® and LEDs, as not all stones or surfaces transmit light in the same way.

Distinguishing Light Tape® From LEDs

Henge Stone Works offers both Light Tape® and LED options, each with its unique characteristics.

  • Light Tape® is a continuous, meter-wide surface coated with phosphors that glow evenly with electricity, delivering a consistent source of light. It's perfect for translucent to transparent surfaces.
  • LEDs, on the other hand, are single-point sources of light with phosphors coated on the tip of each LED module. They require additional light diffusion and scattering technology to create an even light source. LEDs are more suitable for opaque to dense surfaces.

We're here to offer our expert opinion and assist in making the right choice for your project. Don't hesitate to reach out to Henge Stone Works for guidance.

Calculating the Cost of Backlit Countertops

In general, the cost of backlighting a countertop is roughly equivalent to the cost of the surface itself. This cost includes both the material and installation expenses and typically falls within the range of $90 to $100 per square foot at Henge Stone Works.

Light Tape® may have a slightly higher cost on a per-square-foot basis but offers the advantage of easy installation with minimal additional costs. For LEDs, the cost includes plastic light diffusing sheets and installation expenses.

If you choose an LED solution for your project, several suppliers offer different LED options. These include squares, acrylic panels, and flexible sheets with LEDs around the edges. Your choice depends on your specific project requirements.

Some well-known LED suppliers include SLABlite and Evo-lite® Advanced Luminous Solutions. They provide various options to consider, each with distinct features and configurations. Be sure to assess which option aligns best with your project's needs, whether for commercial or residential use.

Easy Installation for Your Backlit Countertops

There's no doubt about it. Installing any stone countertop is complicated. Installing an upgraded backlit option requires even more expertise. Fortunately, at Henge Stone Works, we're up for the task. Not only are we specialized for large-format slab installation, but we can simplify the backlighting process.

Henge Stone Works simplifies the installation process. If you're working with a stone fabricator, electrician, or contractor, they should have a template of the stone or countertop underneath. Our state-of-the-art laser machine precisely cuts Light Tape® to match the exact shape you need for your surface.

You only need to provide a sub-surface, typically a thin sheet of plywood or acrylic, on which to lay the Light Tape®. We can illuminate surfaces up to 11 feet in length and 30 inches in width with a single panel and connection. For larger or wider surfaces, we can overlap panels since Light Tape® is thinner than a credit card. Our custom backlighting works for any countertop project.

We pre-cut sink, faucet, and outlet holes for you, making installation even more straightforward. There's no need to worry about buffers, space accommodations, or heat sinks, as Light Tape® doesn't generate heat. With minimal effort, Light Tape® easily integrates into your existing plans and designs.

In essence, Light Tape® is a user-friendly, versatile material that simplifies the backlighting process. Your contractor or electrician can easily handle the installation of our Light Tape® panels. Feel free to have them contact us with any questions they may have.

We're here to make your backlighting project a success, regardless of whether it's your first or thousandth project. Trust Henge Stone Works to provide the custom results you crave.
